The Northwest has a certain reputation. No, we’re not talking about Sasquatch or Bigfoot. The region, more than others, has an exercised environmental consciousness born of a desire to preserve its celebrated natural resources. Consequently, businesses operating in the state of Washington are made aware of environmental considerations in their business planning.

Graham Gill, CEO of Pro-Vac, headquartered in Puyallup, Washington, knows all about it. The company is constantly disturbing and relocating soils, flushing sewers, protecting pipes with cathodic and epoxy coating and otherwise interacting with Mother Nature on several levels. The company is being watched as it does so.

“There definitely are different regulations from the West Coast to the East Coast,” Gill says. “In the Northwest, regulations are more environmentally strenuous than in the middle of the country, for instance.”

This is relevant to the company because it is expanding its operations beyond Washington and Oregon into other regions. The different expectations in different jurisdictions can translate into different operating methods — not less responsibly, but with different criteria in mind.

“As we’ve gone into different markets, we haven’t run into any regulations more strict than what we were used to here,” Gill says.

That is, state and jurisdictional regulators in the new markets haven’t been an issue. What has changed is the expectations of different customers.

“The industries are different in our new markets,” Gill says. “In Texas and Oklahoma, for instance, we’re working with oil and gas companies. That’s far different than on the West Coast where we typically work with pulp mills and paper mills. So, the differences in regulations that we’re encountering are not at the governmental level, but at the customer level.”

CONTINUAL MANHOLE REHABILITATION HELPS UTILITY DISTRICT AVOID REPLACEMENTS.

PROBLEM / Recently, Washington’s Lakehaven Utility District restored 70 precast concrete manholes (860 vertical feet) that were exhibiting medium to heavy deterioration with exposed aggregate. Having completed various projects throughout the past three years for the Lakehaven Utility District, including 102 manhole rehabilitations, applicator Pro-Vac had the extensive experience necessary for a successful manhole rehabilitation.

SOLUTION / Prior to surface preparation, Pro-Vac took measures to protect the flow lines, then removed all material from the inside of the structures and pressure washed the interior. On the heavily deteriorated structures, Epoxytec’s Silicate, a cementitious base coat, was applied to create a smooth finish. Once cured, the structure was pressure washed again, and CPP Sprayliner was applied at 120 mils.

From fixing underground pipe leaks, to pressure-testing, to sealing dilapidated manhole vaults, our team can prolong the life of current sewer and pipe systems for years and years.

If an underground pipe or manhole vault is leaking, it runs the risk of seeping into the groundwater as well as the other way around – our groundwater getting into our sewer systems. Any water coming through our sewers is treated by a Water Treatment Plant – a process that costs the city and taxpayers money. If there’s multiple leaks in the sewer system and the Water Treatment Plant has to treat all the additional groundwater, it can get expensive fast.

Underground Grouting

When underground pipes leak, one option is to dig in the ground and replace the broken section of pipe. The alternative (and much less expensive) method is to call Pro-Vac’s Grouting Division. From above-ground, we can find the exact points of leaking and “spot-repair” the pipe. Our special mixture of grouting compounds are as thin as water and get pumped into the cracks and leaks. Once the compounds are mixed in the soil, it turns the soil into a watertight gel compound that will effectively seal the leaks.

Essentially how it works, is that it patches the pipe from the OUTSIDE. Whether the leak is in a straight pipe, lateral pipe, or a joint – we have the equipment and expertise to bring the pipe back to 100% functionality. The grouting compounds that we use are permanent fixes. They will be the solution to a leak in the sewer system for years and years.

As with all our services, we are very big on maintaining the environment of the communities we work in. The same goes for the chemicals we use in our grouting compounds. Once the compound is mixed in the soil, it is completely inert. No dangerous chemicals are used that might hurt the environment.

Sealing Vaults

In addition to pipeline repair, Pro-Vac’s Grouting Division can also seal dilapidated manhole vaults and other sewer components as well.

The constant churning of our sewer systems produce hydrogen sulfide [H2S] gas. Over time, that gas will erode the concrete of our sewer vaults. Some sewer systems that were built 50 or 60 years ago are in desperate need of upkeep to avoid groundwater leaks. Using our chemical and cementitious techniques, Pro-Vac can effectively bring these vaults back to life.

Starting with a pressure wash, we then apply a thick coat of our compound that is resistant to H2S gas and help protect the concrete underneath. Our compound is designed for use in the humid conditions of a sewer system and as with our underground grouting compound – is completely safe for the environment.

What is Hydro-Excavation?

Hydro-Excavation uses pressurized water to break up the soil and industrial vacuums to remove it. It is a safe, environmentally-friendly method of SAFELY digging around underground utilities – and won’t even damage tree roots. In addition it can be used for potholing, trenching, tunneling, and contamination spills.

Hydro-Excavation vs. Traditional Excavation

The main difference is the most important one: safety. By vacuuming up the dirt, you’re “revealing” what’s under the surface as opposed to penetrating the earth with a giant metal claw – and if there’s anything underground, a traditional excavator will most certainly damage it. Taking out an electrical line or fiber optic line could mean disaster for the surrounding areas, so why take the risk?

It can also be substantially CHEAPER. Getting a traditional excavator onsite means a separate truck and trailer to haul it to the location. If you need to haul the dirt away, that could mean a separate Front Loader machine to put the dirt in yet another vehicle dump truck. Our Hydro-Excavation trucks can do the work of 4 machines.
